Signs of depression in the workplace

Fatigue due to sleep problems. Anger and irritability. Expressing negative thoughts. Stress, anxiety and depression can affect your productivity, work-life balance and overall health and mental well-being. Workplace depression is an area of increasing concern.


When an employee is depressed , it can affect not only that employee’s productivity and happiness, but the entire mood of his or her co-workers and their productivity too.

Luckily, depression in the workplace is not inevitable or hopeless. The causes of depression vary, but possible factors include life events, physical conditions , medication , stress and lack of sleep. Pressures in the workplace – for example fear of redundancy, long hours , dealing with difficult people or situations, or unreasonable targets – can both cause. While depression hasn’t been shown to cause anxiety , the two conditions often occur together.


Symptoms of anxiety can include: nervousness , restlessness , or feeling tense. The workplace is a reflection of its surrounding community. Inevitably, issues in the community like addiction, depression, and family conflict have a direct impact on the workplace.


Among these issues there is no topic more emotionally charge or more important, than suicide.

However, there are noticeable signs that could initiate a conversation. Depression in the workplace can be invisible and go undetected. Is it my Job to Approach an Employee About Their Mental Health?


If these symptoms are starting to affect an employee’s work, then it is absolutely within your realm as a manager. Signs of depression in employees: First of all, we need to recognize the signs of depression. Many of those exhibited in the workplace can be performance-related. They can include: Poor quality work. Sadness is one of the most commonly misunderstood early signs and symptoms of depression.


Sadness is perhaps one of the most stereotypical signs of depression , although it is possible to have severe clinical depression without actually feeling sad. Putting things off, missed deadlines, accidents. Seems scattered or absentminded.


Procrastination, indecisiveness, slowed productivity. Late to work, afternoon fatigue, accidents. The inability to concentrate fully or make decisions may lead to costly mistakes or accidents.


A person with symptoms of work related depression can possess any of the following: the inability to cope – Normal routine tasks become a battle to complete. You feel a sense of self-worthlessness combined with uncontrollable crying spells. Anxiety takes control and.

Ask employee how to handle co -workers. Success is when an employee returns and is able to sustain a level of engagement in the workplace. In fact, employers are losing work days per depressed worker, with two-thirds coming from “presenteeism” - when workers are present, but less productive.
