How to deal with post natal depression?

How is postnatal depression diagnosed? It is estimated that to percent of pregnant women are affected by this condition. The symptoms are similar to those in depression at other times.


These include low mood and other symptoms lasting at least two weeks. Depending on the severity, you may struggle to look after yourself and your baby. As well as postnatal depression , a number of other mental health conditions can also develop after giving birth.


Perinatal depression is depression experienced during pregnancy (known as ante or prenatal depression) or after childbirth (known as postnatal depression ). What is perinatal depression ? Postnatal depression is a type of depression that many parents experience after having a baby.

It can also affect fathers and partners, although this is less common. Up to one in six women experience postnatal depression , which develops between one month and up to one year after the birth. Antenatal depression is when you experience depression during pregnancy, and affects up to one in ten women in Australia. Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is a valuable and effici ent way of identifying patients at risk for “perinatal” depression.


Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that can affect women after childbirth. Mothers with postpartum depression experience feelings of extreme sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion that may make it difficult for them to complete daily care activities for themselves or for others. Onset is typically between one week and one month following childbirth. PPD can also negatively affect the newborn child.


Ante natal depression can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. It affects about in every women who give birth in Australia each year. All parents go through a period of adjustment as they try to handle the huge changes a baby brings.


It usually develops within the first four weeks after childbirth. However, it can start several months following childbirth. Most of this leaflet is about this common form of depression.


Antenatal and postnatal depression are together known as perinatal depression. It causes depressive symptoms such as low moo confusion, and withdrawal from others. PND can follow on from Prenatal Depression ( depression during pregnancy), or it can occur on its own.

Symptoms include sadness and hopelessness. With no intervention, it can last for months or years, but effective treatment is available.
