Biblical definition of depression

What does the Bible say about depression? Is there a spiritual explanation for depression? A deep sense of despondency, discouragement and sadness, often linked with a sense of personal powerlessness and a loss of meaning in and enthusiasm for life. Many biblical characters show evidence of such behaviour which originates in a number of different ways.


How can a Christian overcome depression ? Those suffering from depression can experience intense feelings of sadness, anger, hopelessness, fatigue, and a variety of other symptoms.

Poor people like Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth, and very rich people, like King Solomon, suffered from depression. Young people, like Davi and older people, like Job, were also afflicted. Shifting the blame to others will never help.


Even when we have been wronged by others, depression will not be caused by the wrong done, but by our sinful reactions. Realize that there is hope. When we say that most depression is a result of unbiblical and sinful reactions to problems, it sounds unloving. While medical and emotional problems can and often do contribute to depression , for others, this illness has very significant spiritual components. Because of recent events, there has been a lot written about the topic of depression and suicide, much of which has been very critical of churches and biblical counselors.


We have a friend who has been engaged in a long-term heroic struggle with depression that has included times of fighting suicidal thoughts.

The physical symptoms of depression include sadness, emptiness, withdrawal from others, irritability, emotional sensitivity, low motivation and self-esteem, and suicidal thoughts (to name a few). There is yet another form of depression which is spiritual in nature. Overcoming fear and worry sounds crazy impossible for we who fear and worry. Yet you can overcome this dastardly duo.
