Transient epileptic amnesia is a rare but probably underrecognized form of temporal lobe epilepsy , which typically manifests as episodic isolated memory loss. Consequently, transient epileptic amnesia may be readily misdiagnosed as a nonepileptic memory dysfunction in older individuals. Last December, my surgeon started me on epilepsy medication, as a treatment for these memory failures. Today, I went for my latest check-up and to get my next prescription of epilepsy (Vimpat aka Lacosamide), and he told me that in fact I have Transient Global Amnesia.
The spells tend to occur on waking from sleep. Most patients experience other seizure types compatible with an origin in the temporal lobes, but transient amnesia is the only manifestation of epilepsy in about one third of patients. Epileptiform abnormalities arising from the temporal lobes are most often detected on interictal sleep EEG. The attacks are frequent, usually around times each year in untreated patients. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
During episodes, patients may exhibit repetitive questioning and appear confuse disoriente or anxious, but typically have otherwise preserved neurologic function. I have read in some reports that the norm is episodes in years. In addition to the amnesic episodes, many patients describe significant interictal memory difficulties. Performance on standard neuropsychological tests is often normal.
The Epilepsy Clinic –Test Your Clinical Knowledge. The mission of the Epilepsy Foundation is to lead the fight to overcome the. Compared to TGA, episodes of TEA are typically briefer (h), commonly occur on waking, have a high recurrence rate and may be accompanied by other features suggestive of epilepsy such as automatisms or olfactory hallucinations. Many TEA patients report interictal memory problems, with evidence of accelerated long-term forgetting and remote memory impairment.
The Merck Manual provides information on this condition for patients and caregivers. Herein, we review current knowledge on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis. Transient global amnesia and epilepsy: Electroencephalographic distinction , abstract = Electroencephalographic recordings were obtained during episodes of transient global amnesia in patients.
Identification of factors contributing to recurrence will help to identify underlying mechanisms of these events and guide management. In other words, I am not having a stroke, but it sure looks like I am. During my most recent episode, the ER called my husband to tell him they thought I’d had a stroke. There are a number of well recognised causes of transient amnesia , the most common probably being head injury, followed by transient global amnesia , migraine, drugs and rarely, transient ischemic attacks (mini strokes).
Transient Epileptic Amnesia (TEA) Transient amnesia refers to repeated attacks of memory loss. Last year i was diagnosis with Transient Global Amnesia. Taking Keppra and tapering off.
TGA has been a well-described phenomenon for more than years. Clinically, it manifests with a paroxysmal, transient loss of memory function. IMPLICATIONS: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is an amnestic syndrome with an abrupt onset. The hallmark of TGA is a sudden inability to form new memories despite normal neurological function. We report two cases of TGA after general anesthesia.
There is a form of temporal lobe epilepsy where the main sign of a seizure is a 15- to 30-minute period of forgetting. This is called transient epileptic amnesia (TEA). This type of epilepsy mainly affects middle-aged adults. Seizures occur about once a month.
Neurology Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological disorder whose key defining characteristic is a temporary but almost total disruption of short-term memory with a range of problems accessing older memories.
