Smiling depression definition

What is smiling depression? Can smiling cure depression? Do I have seasonal affective disorder? The definition of smiling depression is: appearing happy to others, literally smiling, while internally suffering with depressive symptoms.


Smiling depression often goes undetected.

Lack of sleep or excessive sleep. Irritability most of the day. Unexplained weight loss or weight gain. Feeling of worthlessness.


Individuals who suffer from this condition are often successful, might be marrie and have active social lives. It’s a major depressive disorder with atypical symptoms, and as a result, many don’t know they’re depressed or don’t seek help. It’s appearing happy to others and smiling through the pain, keeping the inner turmoil hidden. Those who do would prefer to keep their struggle private.

Essentially, smiling depression is a type of unhappiness that is masked with a veneer of happiness (a smile), and is often accompanied with self-denial and avoidance of one’s feelings. It is contrasted with melancholic depression , another subtype of depression , involving symptoms of insomnia (rather than oversleeping ), loss of appetite (rather than increased appetite), a relative lack of mood reactiveness to environmental circumstances, and a markedly diminished ability to feel pleasure. Interestingly, scientists and psychiatrists have never recognized the term “smiling depression” in medical literature.


Instea this phrase is considered a nickname, designating another officially recognized description, “atypical depression. This designation means what it implies. A smile begins in our sensory corridors.

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Psychiatry Depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity.


It may feature sadness, difficulty in thinking and concentration and a significant increase or decrease in appetite and time spent sleeping.
