Does EEG testing help depression?

Which features of EEG can be used for depression? Is neurofeedback the answer to depression? How does depression affect depression? The patient was a 37-year-old businessman, who was treated for depression with medication during the months prior to his first visit to our hospital.


EEG can determine if a depressed patient will do better on antidepressants or talk therapy. People react differently to positive events in their lives. For some, a small reward can have a large impact on their moo while others may get a smaller emotional boost from the same positive event.


In cases of depression, normalization of an EEG has potential to significantly reduce depressive symptoms or in highly-responsive cases, eliminate the need for medication.

Altering brain waves via neurofeedback can influence arousal, neurotransmission, and cognitive function. Neurofeedback, also called EEG biofeedback or neurotherapy, is a research proven way to help you improve your brain function through intensive brain training exercises. Although the technology is quite sophisticate the process is simple, painless, and non-invasive. That’s why it’s so important to get treatment for it. According to a study published in Epilepsy and Behavior, depression is the most common mental health problem to affect people with epilepsy.


Alpha EEG asymmetry was significantly higher in depressed than healthy participants at pre-treatment, positively correlated with negative affect and behavioral inhibition, and inversely correlated with lower behavioral activation sensitivity. For some types of epilepsy , stereotactic laser ablation or stereotactic radiosurgery may provide effective treatment when an open procedure may be too risky. In these procedures, doctors direct radiation at the specific area in the brain causing seizures to destroy that tissue in an effort to better control the seizures.


In selecting an antidepressant to be used in a patient with epilepsy, consideration should be made with regard to drug-drug interactions with the antiepileptic drugs, the potential for seizure activity, and the prominent depressive symptoms exhibited by the patient. EEG neurofeedback for depression has mainly been based on models of altered hemispheric asymmetry. MRI-based neurofeedback (fMRI-NF) can utilize functional localizer scans that allow the dynamic adjustment of the target areas or networks for self-regulation training to individual patterns of emotion processing.


Electroencephalography ( EEG ) is a procedure that produces wave-like readouts of electrical activity in the brain. The majority of research analyzing the effect of neurofeedback for the treatment of anxiety has shown promise. Alpha, theta and alpha-theta enhancements are effective treatments of the anxiety disorders (Table 1).


Alpha suppression is also effective, but less so (Table 2). Perceived success in carrying out the task plays an important role in clinical improvement. Nearly of asthma patients showed signs of depression.

Because depression is common in the general population and occurs even more often in patients with epilepsy (up to , depending on the screening tool used39), and because treatment of depression usually requires long-term drug treatment , the choice of antidepressant medication must be made carefully, taking into account the possible effect on seizure threshold. In treating these conditions, neurofeedback ( EEG biofeedback) may offer an alternative to invasive treatments such as medication, ECT, and intense levels of transcrancial magnetic stimulation.
