How to talk to a therapist about depression

When it comes to depression , just talking is an important step to getting better.

More and more, people seek out therapists so they can talk. It’s hard finding people to talk to these days. We’re so busy, and sometimes the people closest to us aren’t the ones we should be talking to. Making an Appointment With a Therapist.


After you’ve collected a few names, call at least two therapists and talk with them about your situation. Feel free to ask them questions about their experience dealing with depression and their approach to treatment. If you like what you hear, make an appointment.

Or maybe be honest with them and say how you feel and that you just want someone else to talk to , a professional who understands you and can help you.


Medication for depression can sometimes require adjustments. It’s also common for depressed people to say hurtful things and lash out in anger. Remember that this is the depression talking , not your loved one, so try not to take it personally.


A patient, with a qualified talk therapist , chooses what to talk about in talk therapy. By doing this both the therapist and the patient can jointly work through specific traumas to overcome negative reactions, and to learn more appropriate behaviors for the future. The message is clear: Take your therapist off the pedestal and take ownership of your therapy.
