Depression symptoms sleeping too much

Why does too much sleep cause depression? Can sleeping too much every day cause depression? How does sleep help fight depression? Is excessive sleeping, napping a sign of depression?

While undersleeping can mess with your moods, memory, hand-eye coordination and heart, the dangers of oversleeping potentially include depression , diabetes, heart disease, an increased risk of stroke,. Increased appetite or weight gain. Sleeping too much but still feeling sleepy in the daytime.

Both disturbed sleep and sleeping too much can be symptoms of depression.

One way to relieve symptoms of depression is through exercise and physical activity but if a person lacks energy because of a sleep problem then they may do less exercise and feel worse. While depression can cause insomnia, it can also cause you to sleep too much. Approximately percent of people with depression report oversleeping. Even after getting additional sleep, you will never feel completely refreshed. Oversleeping is considered a potential symptom of depression.


While many people with depression report insomnia, about tend to oversleep. People with long sleep durations are also more likely to have persistent depression or anxiety symptoms compared to normal sleepers. While the exact cause of long sleeping depends on multiple factors, possible causes of sleeping too much include: Alcohol or substance abuse. Personality traits, such as a tendency to be introverted or to worry too much. Excessive sleepiness not only affects your physical health, it has a big impact on your mental health as well. While many times it can seem intuitive to rest more when we’re in pain, research shows that in some cases too much sleep can exacerbate symptoms.


Back pain can worsen from too little activity or spending too much time in bed.
