Amnesia disorder

What are the symptoms of amnesia? Is amnesia good or bad? Instea people with amnesia — also called amnestic syndrome — usually know who they are. Dissociative amnesia is one of a group of conditions called dissociative disorders.

When one or more of these functions is disrupte symptoms can result.

Amnesia is a form of memory loss. Some people with amnesia have difficulty forming new memories. Others can’t recall facts or past experiences. People with amnesia usually retain knowledge of their own identity, as well as motor skills.

Mild memory loss is a normal part of aging. These disorders can be caused by stroke, head trauma , tumors, or other conditions that cause damage to parts of the brain involved in memory. In the case of dissociative amnesia , individuals are separated from their memories, suffering abnormal memory loss in ways that significantly disrupt their lives.

This is very rare and more likely in older adults with vascular (blood vessel) disease.

Traumatic amnesia : Memory loss from a hard blow to the hea for instance, in a car accident. The memory can be either wholly or partially lost due to the extent of damage that was caused. People who drink alcohol, for example, may experience periodic episodes of amnesia during the times in which they’re intoxicated. People like this can also experience a more severe form of amnesia after years of alcohol abuse,. The amnestic disorders are a group of disorders that involve loss of memories previously establishe loss of the ability to create new memories, or loss of the ability to learn new information.

This can mean that the person loses memories from the past, that they lose the ability to make new memories, or a combination of both. In some cases, amnesia occurs because of physical damage to the brain. In other cases, emotional distress can lead to the psychological disorder dissociative amnesia. It is usually caused by trauma or stress.

Diagnosis is based on history after ruling out other causes of amnesia. A wide variety of conditions seen in medical practice can produce memory impairment ( amnesia ). Normal aging, depression, and anxiety are commonly associated with memory difficulties, as are many neurologic conditions. Systemic illnesses can impair memory by injuring vulnerable limbic regions sensitive to hypoxia or hypoglycemia. Psychogenic amnesia or dissociative amnesia , is a memory disorder characterized by sudden retrograde episodic memory loss, said to occur for a period of time ranging from hours to years.

Symptoms — ranging from amnesia to alternate identities — depend in part on the type of dissociative disorder you have. Times of stress can temporarily worsen symptoms, making them more obvious.

People from all age groups and racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds can experience a dissociative disorder. However, familial cases of TGA have rarely been reported. Most familial reports have involved siblings, with only occasional or possible parental involvement. The interruption in memory may be voluntary or involuntary and is most often a result of psychological trauma. In fact, they so often occur together that the spectrum of symptoms produced during the course of the two diseases is frequently referred to as Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a mysterious syndrome causing a relatively brief inability to form new memories. It usually happens in people who are middle-aged or elderly. The other is the duration of time of lost consciousness. Loss of memory of events prior to injury is called retrograde amnesia , while loss of memory following the injury is called anterograde amnesia.

The disorder is relatively rare, occurring in about 23.
